Hyvä acts like a rejuvenation for Magento. This community-driven theme modernizes the frontend technologies used. It simplifies development, enabling much higher-performing webshops compared to themes based on the Adobe Commerce tech stack. DELABYTE has already implemented initial web projects with Hyvä and is an official supplier of the theme. We recommend its use for every new project.
Hyvä is a theme for Magento based on a modern technology stack. Unlike traditional themes, Hyvä does not use JavaScript frameworks such as Knockout.js, require.js, and jQuery. Instead, it relies on AlpineJS and TailwindCSS.
A key advantage for online shop operators is the improved performance. Due to the reduced complexity and streamlined technical base, pages load significantly faster. At the same time, development effort is reduced. Shop operators benefit from a shorter time-to-market.
The Dutch company Hyvä Themes B.V. sells the theme under very fair licensing terms. The license for a Magento 2 installation with any number of domains and store views costs a one-time fee of 1,000 euros plus VAT and includes all future updates. There are no ongoing costs.
Since its release, Hyvä has caused a stir in the Magento scene. Version 1.0 of the template, developed by Willem Wigman, was released in early 2021 and has since had a significant impact on the Magento ecosystem. Hyvä is increasingly gaining importance in the development of new online shops based on Magento. Willem Wigman developed the theme from scratch, creating a technically leaner alternative to the existing standard themes. The term “hyvä” comes from Finnish and translates to “good.”
“While the JavaScript world has been rapidly evolving, Magento had seen little change for a long time. Hyvä changes this. We can now build much higher-performing Magento shops with modern technologies in a shorter time."
Instead of Knockout.js, RequireJS, and jQuery, Hyvä uses AlpineJS and TailwindCSS. This switch to lean and modern frameworks is crucial for the performance boost. AlpineJS enables asynchronous API calls, eliminating the need to load numerous JavaScript files. With the old technology stack, it was nearly impossible to achieve top scores on tools like Google PageSpeed. With Hyvä, pages load much faster, making it possible to achieve PageSpeed scores of 99 or 100 points.
AlpineJS and TailwindCSS also provide a better developer experience. Instead of constantly switching between different contexts during development, the main tasks are now all handled within HTML files. TailwindCSS offers a range of utility classes that can be used directly in the HTML template. This allows developers to work in a comfortable and focused workflow, speeding up development.
Hyvä is flexible and can be used in combination with components of the standard Adobe Commerce themes. However, since Hyvä is based on a new technology stack, it is not out-of-the-box compatible with all available Magento modules for previous Adobe and third-party themes. These modules require compatibility modules for Hyvä, which re-implement certain parts considering the adjusted technical base. The Magento community is already producing a growing pool of compatible modules. How Adobe will respond to this community-driven technology update remains to be seen.
